“Frank Sinatra: From Band Singer to Icon” will celebrate the life and career of a singular figure in American culture who became “The Voice” around the world. Aristotle’s Playlist, featuring Louche, is the first of a midday express concert series organized by Hunter College’s Office of the Arts. Now in its 23rd year, the PRELUDE Festival returns with a new lineup of works-in-progress and critical conversations, organized by the artistic team: Alessandra Gómez-Misserian, Olivia Mermagen, and Dylan Sherman. This year's edition welcomes two new partners in Brooklyn: Coffey Street Studio in Red Hook and the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, both of which have a long-standing history of supporting artists. This expansion reflects a broader focus on celebrating the work happening in Brooklyn—PRELUDE steps outside the theater in midtown and into a hotel loft inside a former barrel factory, a converted 19th-century warehouse, and into private apartments. This year's artistic cohort spans solo performance, ensemble work, contemporary dance, clown, theater, performance art, and music, and multidisciplinary work. Artists were invited to present whatever best serves their practice in this particular moment. For some, that has meant responding directly to the strangeness of these spaces, building new work from their particular textures and histories. For others, it has meant bringing a finished piece into the world, or opening a work-in-progress to share what's still taking shape. The year’s festival is in service of what each artist’s work needs at this moment. As a featured program of the Martin E. Their story also revealed a broader injustice: millions of children don’t receive the evidence-based instruction they need to learn to read. That realization sparked the creation of Left Behind. La Cocina by Tony Meneses takes a look at the lives of restaurant workers in a modern-day Midtown kitchen as they examine whether it’s possible for them to pursue their dreams. Raw, hilarious, and devastatingly real, La Cocina celebrates the diversity of NYC as it confronts their struggle to survive here, uncovering conflicts of race, gender, and class among the workers. The Diaries of Judith Malina, volumes 1-4 compiles the personal writings of radical theatre director, actor, and activist Judith Malina, spanning 1947 through 1971—the most influential period of her remarkable and storied career. A committed anarchist and pacifist, Malina made theatre as a way to engage in revolutionary action. Her diaries showcase her political and social observations, cultural commentary, self-reflection, and wit. This expertly prepared set is compiled and edited by theater historian Kate Bredeson, who worked for over eleven years on the project. Bredeson invites us to recognize Malina for her accomplishments not only as an artist and an activist, but as one of the great literary diarists. In addition, German theatre historian Anna Opel from Berlin will discuss her 2026 Malina biography NOW! Judith Malina und das Living Theater (NOW! Judith Malina and the Living Theatre). In her book Opel explored archival material and followed Malina's footsteps, conducting research with artists in New York, Berlin, and southern Italy. Written by By María Irene Fornés and guest directed by Ran Xia. Synopsis Fefu and seven of her friends have gathered at her home for the day to plan a charity event. As the women move throughout the house, their conversations reveal the different sides of their personalities and the private struggles they each carry. In between water fights, rabbits, laughter, and moments of tension, they share their dreams, fears, relationships, and frustrations with one another. Although they come together as friends, each woman experiences the pressures and expectations placed on women in very different ways. As the day continues, the playful atmosphere becomes increasingly complicated as the women confront issues of control, violence, identity, and repression. María Irene Fornés’ Obie-winning play, Fefu and Her Friends, follows these eight women as they navigate their relationships with each other and the limitations of the world around them. Through its intimate portrayal of female friendship, the play explores gender inequality and the ways social expectations can affect women’s freedom, choices, and sense of self.
